Ffos Las annouces new date for The Welsh Champion Hurdle
Ffos Las Racecourse is delighted to announce that the Welsh Champion Hurdle has moved to a new date on Saturday 15 October.
The move means an exciting new autumn date for Ffos Las’s feature race, which will now take place every October.
This year there is £70,000 of prize money to be won during a spectacular day of racing on a Ffos Las track that now benefits from the installation of 50,000 metres of additional drainage which has completely re-drained the entire area of the chase and hurdle tracks.
“The race has been warmly received by trainers and punters as a fantastic addition to the National Hunt calendar,” said Ffos Las Sales Director Sarah Jones.
“The Winter weather conditions for the past two years have been extreme and The Chairman & Directors have taken the decision to re-locate the fixture from February to October. This will ensure this the jump season re starts at Ffos Las in great style.”
As well as a new date for The Welsh Champion Hurdle, the owners of Ffos Las are delighted with the new drainage work in addition to the 100,000m that was originally installed when the track was opened in 2009.
The Welsh Champion Hurdle was resurrected in the late 2000s following the opening of Ffos Las. The Class 2 Handicap, is run over 2 miles and was won in 2015 by the Paul Nicholls’ trained Silsol, with Kayf Moss trained by Bridgend based John Flint in second.
“We are confident that the investment made in upgrading the drainage will make a huge improvement to the track which is already looking in great condition thanks to Head Groundsman Arwyn Morgan and his team. Moving the Welsh Champion Hurdle to our opening jumps meeting should also ensure a very high quality contest.” said Clerk of the Course Keith Ottesen.
On 15 October gates open at 11.55am with the first race is at 1.55pm. There will also be live music after the meeting. Advance online tickets are available from £10 with hospitality packages and group discount also available.
A bus will operate from Llanelli train station at 12.30pm, returning at 7pm. It is a £1 journey on a first come first served basis. For more information, you can contact Ffos Las at ffoslasracecourse.com or on 01554 811 092.
